Malia Obama recently caught on camera consuming cannabis is a good conversation starter for society

Malia Obama is the older daughter of the United States President, Barack Obama. I'm sure all of you knew that, but just in case you have been living in a forest somewhere I figured I'd cover my bases.

I can't imagine what it was like growing up in the White House. I have read some accounts form memories and biographies, and the stories are very difficult to relate to.

With that being said, I think that the Obama daughters have done a fantastic job of behaving themselves, even under such a high level of scrutiny. All political views aside, I think everyone can agree on that.

Caught on camera

Like many kids her age, Malia Obama attended a music festival this summer. At the music festival (Lollapalooza) Malia Obama was caught on camera taking a hit from what appears to be a joint.

To be fair, I have yet to see an official declaration that it was actually cannabis. For all the world knows maybe she is just good at rolling her own. Or maybe she has a doppleganger. For the sake of this article, I'm going to assume it's cannabis, and assume she inhaled, etc.

In years past, such an action would have been tantamount to treason in the eyes of many members of the public, especially cannabis opponents.

But this is 2016, and Malia Obama is 18 years old. No, she is not 21, and no, she was not in a legal state. However Malia was doing what a lot of people her age do - she was having a good time and enjoying herself while not bothering anyone else.

A mostly supportive response from the public

There was certainly what I would call 'shock articles' published online with the video embedded, For those that haven't seen the video, Google it. It's very easy to find, and I don't see the point in being the trillionth person to plug it when it's not even a big deal.

That's not just my opinion. That seems to be the popular opinion with many media outlets, and it's the overwhelming opinion on social media. Sure, there were some naysayers, but for every negative comment or post or tweet, there were ten fold as many in support.

The penalty for possessing a joint in Illinois by someone who is 18 is a fine of $200 now that cannabis has been decriminalized. There are traffic infractions that carry a larger penalty than that.

I once received a $280 ticket for failing to see a temporary 'no turn' sign at a infrequented traffic side street intersection. If Malia Obama was caught on video doing the same, considering that the fine is larger than possessing a doobie in Illinois, would there be any outcry at all? I would hope not. Who cares.

A good conversation starter for society

Support for cannabis reform is at an all time high. States (and DC) that have legalized so far have set a legal age of 21 years old to purchase and possess cannabis, but a lot of people (myself included) feel that if you are old enough to vote for legalization, that you are old enough to consume cannabis. Feel free to disagree.

Malia Obama is considered an adult for all things other than some particular intoxicants. She is free to make virtually any decision that she wants to.

And with all of the harmful things out there that she could be doing, she instead decides to hang out, take some puffs of a joint, and have a good time. You know, like just about every other 18 year old in America. I know that's what I wanted to do when I was 18.

Is 18 too young to be consuming cannabis? Is consuming cannabis at an event an acceptable setting to be consuming cannabis? Are there healthier ways to be consuming cannabis than smoking it?

These are all questions that are being asked across America right now as a result of the now infamous video, and I for one don't thing it's a bad thing, and hope that it's actually stimulating constructive conversations in households about cannabis, stigma, and responsible use.
