How to Store Your Cannabis the Right Way
How you store your cannabis flower is extremely important.
First, let’s face it, cannabis can be expensive, so you want to make sure you are storing it in the best way possible to make it last as long as possible.
The second point is this: if you are using cannabis for medicinal reasons than it’s incredibly important to make sure that you’re keeping your medicine in conditions where it’s going to be the freshest, most potent and healthiest experience for you and your body.
And lastly – the experience itself. Storing your cannabis properly makes a big difference. When it’s done right you get a fresh, vibrant aroma every time you open the jar, and the experience of vaporizing and smoking is enhanced with all those subtle terpene flavors – not to mention easier on your system.
So today I’m going to share with you the top 3 most important factors for keeping your cannabis fresh:
#1) The Container
There are many different types of storage possibilities for your cannabis, containers ranging from metal, to glass, plastic, ceramic and bamboo, among others.
When selecting your container the first thing to consider is maintaining the health of your cannabis trichomes. These are the parts of the cannabis plant that carry the most medicinal value and potency.
Trichomes are also very sensitive and easy to destroy. This is why you want to avoid handling your cannabis too much and why grinders are recommended over breaking up the buds by hand.
Trichome health is also why you want to select a container where the trichomes are not going to stick to the sides, which often happens with plastic containers.
This is why, here at Green Flower, we tend to favor glass jars. Glass is great to store your flower in because you don’t have to worry about your trichomes sticking to it and you can easily see your beautiful buds.
The second thing to consider is an air tight seal. This will keep your cannabis fresh, prevent it from drying out and preserve the aroma in the jar. A proper seal will also prevent the aroma from leaking out and drawing unwanted attention.
When your cannabis dries out it makes the vaporizing or smoking experience harsher on your system and more importantly you lose a large amount of the medicinal value in your cannabis.
#2) Cool Dark Places
All cannabis products – not just flower – should be stored in a cool, dark place away from heat and light, which can degrade the quality of the cannabinoids and terpenes, lowering the potency and medicinal value of the cannabis.
This is why some people like to use dark glass jars, metal jars or bamboo containers to store their cannabis flower. The down side to this however is that it makes it hard to see your cannabis flower, so if you go with a clear glass jar, just make sure you store the jar in a cool dark place, such as a drawer or cabinet.
However, you do want to make sure you don’t select a cabinet situated above an appliance that produces heat as heat rises and can quickly dry out your cannabis.
Also, if you are storing your cannabis flower to consume via smoking or vaporizing you do not want to store your cannabis in the freezer, as the colder temperature will cause the trichomes to break off and as we mentioned earlier that is where the majority of precious potency and medicinal value reside in your cannabis flower.
Storing it in the fridge is not ideal either as the temperature frequently changes each time you open and close the door, which can lead to mold and mildew forming on your cannabis.
Keeping your cannabis at the right humidity level between 59 and 63 percent makes all the difference. It keeps everything fresh, vibrant and maintains potency and medicinal value. This also creates a much more enjoyable, smoother, and more flavorful consuming experience.
And more important, the right humidity level will keep your cannabis from collecting too much moisture and forming mold or mildew, which can be damaging to your health when consumed.
Luckily there are a couple companies in the cannabis space that simplify the humidity factor. Here at Green Flower we love to use Boveda Packs. This pack basically monitors the conditions in your cannabis flower storage container and adds or removes moisture, as necessary.
